Macs which are running Mac OSX Mojave can use the built-in screen recording feature to record a presentation (in MOV format) which can then be uploaded to the Video Portal.
Recording in OSX Mojave
Ensure you have a microphone connected to your device.
- Press the Command + Shift + 5 key and a small toolbar will appear at the bottom of the screen. Using the buttons on the toolbar, you can choose to record the entire screen or a selected window.
- Click the Options button and ensure that a microphone is selected to record audio. You can use the built-in microphone (if using a laptop), but we recommend an external microphone for better sound quality. You can also choose where to save the finished recording; the default location is the desktop.
- Press the Record button to begin recording your presentation.
- To stop the recording, press the stop button in the menu bar, or press Command + Control + Esc.
- A thumbnail of the recording will appear in the bottom right corner of the screen. Click on it to enlarge the video, and click the trim button to edit the file.
- You can use the editor to trim the start and end of the video. Click Done when finished.
You will now notice that your slides have a sound icon in the corner which indicates that audio narration has been recorded.
You can remove narrations from a slide by choosing Record Slide Show > Clear.
Ensure you save your presentation when narrations have been recorded.
Using QuickTime player to record a presentation (for Macs not using OSX Mojave)
Ensure you have a microphone connected to your device.
You will need to use QuickTime Player to record the screen, follow the instructions provided below.
- Open QuickTime Player and choose File > New Screen Recording from the menu.
- Click the arrow next to the record button to make sure a microphone is selected.
- Press the record button to start a recording, then click anywhere on the screen to record the entire screen, or drag and select an area to record and click Start Recording in that area.
- To stop the recording, press the stop button in the menu bar, or press Command + Control + Esc.
- The recording will automatically open in QuickTime and you can use the Trim function to edit it before saving.
